Accounts & Passwords
Manage Your Passwords
OIT is working to reduce the number of campus logins. In the meantime, these tips may help you manage passwords.
Manage passwords with software. Although not supported by the IT Help Desk, there are software tools to act as password vaults. These tools keep all passwords in one encrypted file locked by one master password on your computer. Examples include Key Pass or Password Safe
Create hints. Make a list of password hints to help you remember passwords and which systems they are associated with. The hints should be descriptive enough to help you, but secret enough not to help others.
Protect passwords. While we do not recommend writing down passwords, if you choose to do this protect them as you would your bank account numbers. Do not leave them where they can be found by others.
Use difficult passwords. Use passwords that make sense to you but cannot be found in a dictionary or be guessed by substituting numbers and symbols for letters. For example 'h@rdp@55w0rd' uses the '@' symbol instead of the letter 'a' and the numbers '5' and '0' instead of the letters 's' and 'o'
