Block Spam with Proofpoint

Are you getting too much spam in your Lotus Notes inbox? Set your Proofpoint filters to control it.

Proofpoint is the spam identification software for Lotus Notes. It allows you to set rules on what is spam and what isn't. You receive one spam digest with junk mail listed rather than multiple separate e-mails.

Log in to Account Management

  1. Go to antispam.unlv.edu OR select Manage My Account from your UNLV SPAM Digest (if you are already receiving it).
  2. You will see a Security Information window, click Yes to login.
  3. In the Login box, type in your Lotus Notes e-mail address.
  4. For Password, type in your password for accessing Lotus Notes via the web. If you are not sure what your password is, please call the Help Desk at 895-0777.
  5. Click Login.

Block Spam

  1. Go to antispam.unlv.edu (or from the spam digest, click "Manage my account")
    • Enter your user id (firstname.lastname@unlv.edu)
    • Enter your Lotus Notes web password (use the one for Notes via the web. If you have forgotten your password, please call the Help Desk at 895-0777.
  2. Once logged into Proofpoint, change your settings.
    • Click "Profile" in bottom left
    • Click "Settings" in upper left
    • In the center, under "What type of spam detection do you want?" you will probably want to select the option reading "Quarantine any spam messages over 50%. A daily digest will be sent." This option will provide you with the most protection possible, although you can select any of the options you prefer (To increase the amount of spam you block, select the lowest percentage. To decrease the amount of blocked spam, select a higher percentage).

After you changed your settings to block spam, scan your daily digests to ensure that Proofpoint has not quarantined a message you want to read.

Block Addresses & Identify Safe Senders

You can log into the Proofpoint server to manage your individual SPAM identification settings. You can block e-mail addresses, mark e-mail addresses as safe, request a new UNLV SPAM Digest and specify policies. You may also opt-out of the daily UNLV SPAM Digest.

Details about the Proofpoint Server & Spam Digest

The Proofpoint server controls a customer’s SPAM identification settings. The server allows:

  • Customizable settings for individual account control
  • Create safe senders list (white list) for individual addresses or entire domain
  • Create blocked senders list (black list) for individual addresses or entire domains

The UNLV SPAM Digest is an e-mail that is sent to your mailbox each day. The digest displays a list of all the messages in Quarantine, which are being withheld from your Inbox because they could pose a threat.

From the digest, you can do the following:

  • Release individual messages to your Inbox
  • Add a sender to your safe list
  • Access your Account Management page
  • Request a fresh digest for an immediate view of all messages in Quarantine
  • Request a list of addresses on your Safe/Blocked Sender List

How Proofpoint works

  1. Messages arrive at the Lotus Notes E-mail server.
  2. Proofpoint examines the message and tags it with a score (The higher the score, the more likely the message is considered SPAM).
  3. Proofpoint looks at the level of SPAM detection policy that you have selected AND delivers the message to your Inbox OR witholds the message from your Inbox and places it in Quarantine.
  4. A report of all the Quarantine messages called the UNLV SPAM Digest gets delivered to your Inbox periodically, listing the message's score, date, subject, and sender. User may choose to leave it in Quarantine (which will delete the message in 8 days), or release the quarantined message back to the Inbox.
