Service Pack 3 for Windows XP
Installing Windows Service Pack 3 for XP may cause a variety of problems such as continual reboot, inability to boot up at all, loss of configurations, conflicts with applications installed after the Service Pack, or other issues.
Please take the following actions appropriate for your situation:
For those whose computers automatically update:
- Click on the yellow exclamation point in the bottom right hand corner of your screen.
- Click Custom
- Unselect Windows Service Pack 3 for Windows XP
If you don't see this the yellow exclamation point:
See if the service pack is already installed: Start, Control Panel, Add/Remove programs. Follow removal instructions below.
Check your update schedule: Start, Control Panel, Automatic Updates. Delay your next automatic update by changing your update schedule or you may change your updates to prompt you rather than doing it automatically. View setting. When you get notification of the update, you do not need to install it until you receive further notice from OIT.
Remember that usually Automatic Updates are the preferred method so your computer is updated and safe on a regular basis.
If you manually update your computer:
Do not select Windows Service Pack 3 for Windows XP (do not allow the update to install).
If Service Pack 3 is already installed:
If you are experiencing problems, you may remove Service Pack 3 using the instructions provided below. Even if your computer seems to be functioning normally, you may want to remove SP 3 and wait for the new release.
To remove Service Pack 3 by using Add or Remove Programs
- Click Start, and then click Control Panel.
- Click Add or Remove Programs, click Windows XP Service Pack 3, and then click Remove.
- Follow the instructions that appear on your screen.
Important
If you choose to remove SP3, a dialog box displays a list of the programs that you installed after you installed SP3. If you continue with the removal, these programs might not work correctly. You may also have to remove these programs and reinstall.
