A server is a computer that handles requests for data, e-mail, file transfers, and other network services from other computers. OIT hosts and supports many servers for UNLV.
Once students activate a computing account, several services are available via student servers.
File storage
Access files from home, school, and anywhere Internet access is available. Students have 100 Megabytes of network storage space accessible via a the campus computer lab workstations or via the web at http://complabs.nevada.edu
Print services
Students can use the computing account to print in labs without setting up a printer. An auditing service ensures print balances are accurately maintained.
Web services
Students can post personal web pages in a directory called public_html. The web page can be accessed at http://complabs.nevada.edu/~username
Faculty and staff can use network storage on our Novell Netware system, also called the "Cluster." It offers:
Personal File Storage
1 Gigabyte of network storage accessible via a Netware client installed on your workstation or via the web at http://files.nevada.edu
Group File Storage
5 Gigabytes of network storage for group sharing. In addition to network file storage fixed to a single user, we also offer group accounts where any number of users may be a member of to share documents.
Network storage tape backup
As a convenience, OIT provides a complimentary network storage back up of all our user and group folders to a tape medium. Restoration of deleted or overwritten files are available upon request. File restoration from tape is limited to 30 days, after 30 days the tape archives are overwritten.
