Mac Snow Leopard Incompatibility Issues

As with many operating system upgrades, there are sometimes disparities in the release of the new operating system and the full support and compatibility of the applications and systems you need to use. It has recently come to our attention that some key applications on campus are not fully compatible and supported with the latest release of Mac OS 10.6 Snow Leopard.

OIT recommends waiting to upgrade your Mac until some of these issue can be addressed by the associated software manufacturers. OIT can assist with finding workarounds for some incompatible systems, but this is not possible in all cases. Using BootCamp or a similar solution on your Mac when necessary is also an option.

Examples of known incompatibility:

  • SPSS 17
  • Novell Network Client
  • Lotus Notes 8.5
  • Norton Antivirus v. 11 and McAfee Antivirus 8.6
  • Parallels 2.5 and older
  • After Effects CS3 and CS4
  • Adobe Acrobat Professional
  • Various versions and aspects of Adobe Creative Suites and the included applications such as Dreamweaver.

A more complete and current list can be found at http://snowleopard.wikidot.com/ or http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3258

Incompatibility issues are varied. Applications may install and run but not function correctly, or some will not run at all.

As a new operating system release gets updates, and as software manufacturers catch up to the requirements of a new operating system, compatibility issues decrease. OIT strives to keep up-to-date on these issues, progress, updates, and any appropriate workarounds. Please contact the IT Help Desk if you need further information or assistance.
