OIT, EPHE Research Team Recognized as a 2016 Splunk Public Sector Innovation Award Winner

A research team comprised of University of Nevada, Las Vegas staff and students has received the Mission award for education from Splunk as part of its Public Sector Innovation Awards. The awards were announced on November 15 during the Splunk GovSummit conference in Washington, D.C.

The Splunk Public Sector Innovation Awards recognize leaders who are using big data to advance technology within their organizations and industries. The Mission award is given to those who are increasing transparency, improving decision-making, or revealing hidden insights through the use of Splunk’s platform solution to achieve its organization’s mission.

The research team, led by Matt Bernacki, PhD (Assistant Professor, Department of Educational Psychology and Higher Education (EPHE) and Cam Johnson (Operations Center Manager, Office of Information Technology), used WebCampus data to predict and improve student success in a biology course. Although Splunk is used for IT systems throughout higher education, UNLV is the first to implement the platform to assist in faculty research.

In addition to winning the Splunk Public Sector Innovation Award, the research was featured in the keynote and in an individual session at Splunk’s annual .Conf conference and published as a case study at Splunk.com. It was also presented at the UNLV Research and Technology Expo in October.
