Computer Replacement Program

Initiated in 2005, the Academic Affairs Computer Replacement Program's primary goal is to ensure faculty and staff computers, in academic departments at UNLV, meet standards. The Provost Office typically provides $500,000 annually to support the replacement cycle; with the budget cuts, this funding was not available for spring 2009.

Instructions

The deadline for submitting computer requests passed on January 20th. OIT is currently interviewing employees regarding their replacement computers.

Computer Allocations

Colleges have been allocated a fixed amount of replacements this year based on total percentage of FTE. Computers built prior to July 1, 2004 will be the only computers replaced by the program.

Determine UNLV Property Control Number

Your UNLV Property Control Number is located on either side of the computer.  The tag looks like this:

UNLV Property Control Number

*Please record the UNLV Property Control Number that is located on the computer, not the monitor or attached peripherals.

Determine Serial Number & Manufacture Date

First, determine the computer manufacturer (Dell, Gateway, Apple or Other) of the computer that needs to be replaced. Then, follow the instructions below:

Apple

  1. Go to the Apple Warranty Website
  2. Enter the serial number of your computer into the field marked About Your Support Coverage located halfway down the page on the left hand side. If you don’t know what your Macintosh’s serial number is, follow the link below the Serial Number text field labeled Where do I find my serial number?
  3. Click "Continue," and the page will refresh to show the warranty status of your computer. The estimated date of purchase is the date your computer was shipped from Apple and what UNLV considers the manufacture date.

Dell

  1. Go to Dell’s Support site.
  2. Enter the service tag (which is the serial number) of your computer into the field marked “Service Tag.” To determine the service tag, follow the link to Find my service tag.
  3. Click Continue, to view the warranty status of your computer. Among the important details here is the column labeled “Start Date.” The Start Date is what we consider the manufacture date.

Gateway

  1. Go to MPC’s (formerly Gateway's) Support site.
  2. Be sure to type the letters GTW prior to the the serial number of your computer into the field marked “Serial Number.” If that doesn't work, e-mail Alex.Bernard@mpccorp.com and say you're with UNLV and you need a manufacture date for the serial number you providee. If you don’t know what your serial number, or where to find it, follow the link below the Serial Number text field labeled How to find my serial#.
  3. Click Submit to see a page that shows the warranty status of your computer. Look for the line labeled Ship Date. The Ship Date is the date your computer was shipped from Gateway and, for our purposes, the manufacture date.

Other Computers

If you have a portable computer from a vendor other than Dell, Gateway or Apple, contact Erika Leaper or David Heiser (below). If you provide them with a state number, they can assist you in determining the age of the computer.
